This week the fires beneath the world trade center finally stopped burning, after 3 months. The year is turning. I hope the new year brings peace in Afghanistan and peace in the Middle East.

The New World Order for those living in NYC is an adventure in travel and transit every day of the week! Today I took the exotic "J" train, a subway line that I have never once ridden in 15 years of living here. It travels between Queens and Brooklyn with a very brief sojourn through lower Manhattan. I used it to get from Delancey Street (F trains stopped running) downtown to Canal Street, where I could take the 6 back uptown to my job. Now I know a bit of where the J train goes - I feel so broadened!

"Someone thought this was an awards show, but we couldn't get anyone to open envelopes. I've been backstage at a lot of concerts, but I've never seen musicians run away so fast from white powder."
-- Billy Crystal, concert in NYC.

"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate....Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
